The Ultimate Guide to Reusing Press-On Nails

One of the biggest financial and environmental benefits of switching to premium press-on nails is reusability. Unlike salon acrylics—which are aggressively filed off your hands and thrown into the dustbin every three weeks—Simply Polished sets are made of durable soft gel. They are designed to be worn, removed, and worn again.
However, to get 3, 5, or even 10 wears out of a single set, you have to treat them properly between applications. Here is the professional guide to cleaning and reusing your press-on nails.
1. The Golden Rule: Never Use Acetone
If you want to reuse your nails, you must banish acetone from your house. Acetone melts plastic and soft gel. If you soak your hands in acetone to remove the nails, they will turn into a gooey, ruined mess. Always use the Warm Oil & Soap Soak method to gently dissolve the glue and slide the nails off intact. (You can read our full tutorial on that method here on the blog!)
2. The Post-Removal Clean Up
Once you have safely removed the press-on nails, you will notice a crusty layer of dried nail glue stuck to the underside of the faux nail. If you try to reapply the nail with this old glue still attached, the nail won't sit flush against your finger, and the new glue won't bond properly.
How to Remove Old Glue:
- The Buffer Method: Take the pink buffer block included in your Simply Polished kit. Gently scrape the underside of the press-on nail until the old, flaky glue turns to white dust and falls away.
- The E-File Method: If you own a cheap, battery-operated nail drill (e-file), use a small barrel bit on the lowest speed setting to lightly buzz away the old glue in seconds. Be careful not to drill into the actual soft gel nail!
- Wipe Clean: Once the old glue is gone, wipe the underside of the press-on with an alcohol pad to remove the dust and sanitize the nail.
3. Storing Your Nails
Do not throw your loose nails into a random makeup bag where they can get crushed, scratched, or lost. Simply Polished sets come in a beautiful, sturdy display box with sticky mounting tape. After cleaning the underside, stick them back onto the display tape in their original order (Thumb to Pinky). This ensures you never lose a nail and don't have to re-size them the next time you want to wear them.
4. Re-Application
When you are ready to wear the set again for an upcoming party or weekend trip, the application process is exactly the same as the first time.
- Push back cuticles.
- Buff natural nail.
- Dehydrate with alcohol.
- Apply fresh glue and press at a 45-degree angle.
Pro Tip: If you only plan to wear the set for 24-48 hours, use Adhesive Tabs for the second application. Tabs leave zero residue on the press-on nail, making the clean-up process completely effortless!
