Nail Care Between Sets: How to Strengthen Your Natural Nails

Premium soft-gel press-on nails are the safest extension method available, primarily because they don't require the aggressive e-filing associated with salon acrylics. However, continuous use of any nail enhancement—even the safest press-ons—requires a proper recovery routine.
If you have just removed a set of Simply Polished nails and plan to apply a new set for an upcoming event, what you do in the days between applications determines the long-term health of your natural nails.
1. The 24-Hour "Breathing" Rule
Nails do not literally have lungs, so they do not "breathe" oxygen. However, the nail plate does need to re-equilibrate its moisture levels. When covered by glue and a soft-gel tip for two weeks, the natural transpiration of moisture from the nail bed is blocked. After safe removal (using our warm oil and soap soak), leave your nails completely bare for at least 24 to 48 hours.
2. Aggressive Hydration (The Role of Cuticle Oil)
Nails become brittle and snap when they lack flexibility, which is governed by hydration. In the hot, often hard-water environments of India, dehydration happens quickly.
- The Fix: During your break, apply a high-quality cuticle oil 3-4 times a day. Look for oils containing Jojoba Oil or Vitamin E. Jojoba has a molecular structure almost identical to human sebum, allowing it to penetrate past the cuticle and deep into the keratin layers of the nail plate.
- The Massage: Don't just paint the oil on; physically massage it into the cuticle for 30 seconds per finger. This stimulates blood circulation to the nail matrix, promoting faster, healthier nail growth.
3. Avoid Chemical Hardeners
Many women immediately reach for commercial "Nail Hardeners" containing formaldehyde. While these products do make the nail feel rock-hard instantly by cross-linking the keratin proteins, they actually make the nail more prone to snapping upon impact because they remove all flexibility.
- The Alternative: Use a keratin-infused base coat or a simple, nourishing ridge-filler during your break days to protect the nail from water logging without making it brittle.
4. The Night Before Your Next Set
If you plan to apply your next set of Simply Polished nails on a Saturday morning, stop all oil treatments on Friday night. Remember, oil is the enemy of nail glue. You want your nails to be hydrated and strong, but the actual surface needs to be bone-dry for the glue to adhere. Wash your hands thoroughly with grease-cutting dish soap the morning of your application, and always use the provided alcohol prep pad to dehydrate the surface right before applying the glue.
By following this simple "hydrate and wait" routine, you can wear press-on nails year-round while keeping your natural nails in pristine condition.
